Urban Portraits & Speed lights

Sheffield City Centre – Sunday 2nd June 2019 – 6 Places

Join me on Sunday 2nd June evening for an  evening of urban portraiture around the heart of Steel City. During these fast paced and exciting photography sessions we will walk and explore the streets and alleyways of this diverse city, finding unusual, interesting and sometimes bizarre back drops as we go. With our model we will create portraits while demonstrating and practising lighting techniques from how to use a simple reflector to adding drama with multiple speed lights. As the afternoon turns into evening we will utilise the vibrant ambience of the city centre to add drama into your portraits, mixing the ambience with simple and uncomplicated off camera flash using everyday speed lights and pop up soft boxes.

Urban portrait and OCF evening

Drama and lunch from simple lighting, in places you never thought possible!!

These sessions are fun and relaxed, they are aimed at photographers at every level from hobbyists to seasoned pro’s. You will learn new techniques and pick up some thought provoking ideas or just perhaps brush up on your flash lighting work flow. Whatever your motivation for joining us I guarantee you will take something from this brilliant and fun evening of city centre photography. As we walk the city centre we will break mid way for a beer or coffee and a chance to chat about the topics covered before setting out to shoot more.

Urban portrait and OCF evening

Sitting in a flower bed, using two simple lights to create stunning portraits, much to the amusement of passing locals :-)

The session will cover the following basic principles of working with ambient and flash:

  • How to use flash, off camera.
  • Using flash on location and utilising unusual locations with texture, colour & posing.
  • Using speed lights with small pop up soft boxes.
  • Using backgrounds that you never thought of before in places you thought unusable.
  • Mixing ambient light with flash
  • Slow shutter work to drag in low light.

With the kind support of local vendors we will create and light street scenes effortlessly….

Urban portrait and OCF evening

We will create portraits in obscure and bizarre places, highlighting that a picture can be made anywhere!

Another outstanding day of photography arranged by James Davies at Rossington Hall. James not only shows and explains the technical side of his style of photography but goes beyond the camera which we sometimes forget about. His ” this is how I do it” approach is delivered in an energetic and fun atmosphere from the minute you arrive until you leave for home leaving you inspired and motivated. If you are serious about photography and are looking to develop your skills then visit http://www.jdaviesphotography.co.uk/ and check out his training pages, you won’t be disappointed.

Great Sunday evening James. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Thanks Rob for assisting & thanks Caitlin for putting up with us. Would definitely recommend this event if it is done again. Just need to sort out my images now.

A fantastic day of training at Hodsock Priory with James and Doug. The models were very friendly and professional, and James was on hand to direct everyone and to show them how he approaches his portraits during a wedding day with natural light and various flash techniques. I definitely recommend this workshop to anyone wanting to take their skill set to the next level.

Hi James, Thanks for an excellent interesting course and day out last Friday. Good to meet proper people of a similar interest and be able to communicate freely. Your personal approach to the photography business is what prompted me to attend and your laid back non-conventional way of working really fits in with my personal lifestyle. My first wedding shoot on Saturday went really well, minimum amount of scrapped images – Hope to meet you again in the not so far future. Alan

Hi James A huge thank you for a wonderful day at Rossington Hall the other week. The day was just great from start to finish. The models were really accommodating and the venue was just perfect. Ange and I are very excited about our new business together.

Hi James, Just a big thankyou for last Friday at Rossington Hall I really enjoyed it and learnt a lot. I was a little apprehensive about going thinking I may be overwhelmed by the other photographers there but this was not the case I felt quite at ease and took a lot in, whether it will stay there we shall have to see! All the best and thanks again

"I thoroughly enjoyed the workshop that James had organised. There was a great mix of talented photographers. The models were fantastic and patient. Food was brilliant and the venue was just stunning! There truly is no better way of learning photography and/or flash than having the pleasure of an experienced photographer like James show you what he does and how he understands light. I learnt a lot while being on his workshop and not only that, it reminded me to be enthusiastic and confident when approaching new things. He's a great guy who will make you relaxed and laugh at the same time. 10/10 for effort and also value for money. I'll look forward to attending another workshop in the future."

"Absolutely smashing day from start to finish, James showed us a lot of good lighting techniques, some that I already use a lot but some that are just pure amazing. I don’t think you book one of James’ workshops without following it up and buying a brand new lens afterwards which I did to get me them key shots that James taught us. Met some amazing people on the workshop and just thoroughly enjoyed it. When your a Photographer you don’t get to mingle with other Photographers often so it was lovely to get to know what other Photographers shoot like and what parts of a Wedding they find the best. James is funny from the minute you meet him, he’s enthusiastic about what he does, his workshops put you at ease with how easy a Wedding can be adding lighting here and there. Would highly recommend to anyone wanting to book with James"

"I was so nervous, yet super excited for James' wedding workshop at Stubton Hall. As a primarily equine photographer, looking to branch into wedding photography, I was really worried I would be completely out of my depth. James was amazing, from start to finish, put me completely at ease and made the whole day thoroughly enjoyable. He explained everything perfectly, not only did I gain a greater understanding of lighting but I also got the opportunity to put the skills into practice under James' guidance. I would highly recommend - thank you so much!"
